There is more to October than just autumn leaves, scary costumes, and pumpkin spiced lattes. At Marlboro Drug Company, we want to encourage you to “think pink” this October. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity for all of us to stand with survivors, raise awareness, and honor the millions across the globe affected by this disease.
Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers among women, affecting millions of lives each year. Breast Cancer Awareness Month was established to increase awareness about this disease, raise funds for cancer research, and to educate the public about the importance of prevention and early detection. As you’re observing the Halloween decor this month, look out for the pink ribbons as well!
Prevalence of Breast Cancer
According to the American Cancer Society, a woman in the United States has about a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer at some point in her life. These rates have increased by about .5% in recent years. While anyone can develop breast cancer, (even men!) certain factors like age, family history, and genetic mutations can increase the risk.
Risk Factors
There are some risk factors for breast cancer that are outside of your control. These include aging, reproductive history, genetic mutations, and a family history of the disease. If you have some of these risk factors, you can talk to your doctor about ways to reduce your risk including medication or surgery.
While many risk factors are outside of your control, you do have control over a few risk factors in your life. These include your physical activity level, obesity, and general health. According to the CDC, older women who are overweight and less physically active have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. As you age, make sure you maintain your physical activity level and take care of your body to decrease your risk of developing breast cancer.
Symptoms and the Importance of Early Detection
Treatment for breast cancer is most effective when detected early. In order to improve your odds of beating this disease, it’s crucial to understand the signs and symptoms early on. The American Cancer Society states that the most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or mass on your breast. Other symptoms may include swelling, skin dimpling, breast or nipple pain, nipple retraction, changes in breast skin, nipple discharge, or swollen lymph nodes.
Just because you have these symptoms does not mean that you have breast cancer, but it does mean you should get evaluated by a doctor. Early detection gives you the best chance for successful treatment!
Should I Get Screened?
One of the best ways to catch breast cancer early is through cancer screenings, or mammograms. The CDC recommends that all women 50-74 years old should get a mammogram every two years. If you have some risk factors mentioned above, you should consider talking to your doctor about the benefits and risks of earlier screenings. If you’re due for a mammogram, now is the time to schedule it! It’s a simple, potentially life-saving test.
