Special care must be taken when it comes to medications and children. All medicine (vitamins included) should be stored up high, away and out of sight from children, including your own.
Consider all of the places you may keep your medicine that children could access, from in your purse to inside your car, and move it immediately. Consider the products that you may not consider to be medicine – vitamins, antacids, birth control, etc.
When giving any medications to children, it’s important to know that some drugs are not suitable, and may lead to serious side effects – especially for children under 6.
Important things to know:
dosage size and frequency
whether or not it is taken with food
what happens if you miss a dose
any potential side effects
interactions with other drugs
Both your doctor and pharmacist will be able to provide you with this information when prescribing or dispensing the medication.
If your child is fussy about taking their medicine, you may also wish to ask if it is okay to mix directly in with small amounts of liquid or food to make it more palatable. Always watch for signs of allergic reactions such as rashes, hives, vomiting or diarrhea. If your child is wheexing or having trouble breathing, call 911 immediately.
